Your baby’s first days are full of change and questions. At SHSU Physicians, we’re here to guide you through each step with expert care and support. Newborn care typically begins within the first week after birth and includes a full checkup to make sure your baby is feeding well, gaining weight, and adjusting to life outside of the womb.

We know that every family’s experience is different. Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your growing family, our pediatricians are here to answer your questions, offer reassurance, and provide the personalized care your baby needs to thrive.

What to Expect from Newborn Care

We’re here to support you from the very beginning. These early visits are designed to keep your baby healthy and give you peace of mind as a parent.

  • What happens during a visit?

    During your baby’s first appointment (usually between 2-5 days old), your pediatrician will:

    • Measure your baby’s weight, length, and head size
    • Check their temperature and heart rate
    • Examine feeding and diapering patterns
    • Look for signs of jaundice or dehydration
    • Answer any questions or concerns you may have

  • When are newborn checkups?

    Regular visits in the first few years help track your child’s growth and catch any concerns early. We recommend checkups at:

    • 2-5 days old
    • 1 month
    • 2 months
    • 4 months
    • 6 months
    • 9 months
    • 1 year
    • 15 months
    • 18 months
    • 2 years
    • 30 months
    • 3 years

    After age 3, most children benefit from a yearly wellness exam.

  • Can come in before birth?

    Yes. Many expectant parents choose to meet their child’s doctor before delivery to get familiar with our office and ask questions. It’s not required, but it can be a helpful way to feel more prepared and supported before your baby arrives.
